Parent & Family Programs: A Year in Review

PaigeMeet Paige LeBlanc, a second-year graduate student in the Higher Education Administration Master’s degree program. She currently serves as the graduate assistant for Parent & Family Programs at LSU.

There’s an old saying that when one door closes, another opens. As we close the door on 2013 and look to the bright start of a new year, we reflect on the successes experienced in the past year to gain perspective and resolve for the upcoming one. Those of us working with Parent & Family Programs at LSU have seen many accomplishments in 2013, and we hope to continue to serve our LSU parents and families even more in the year to come!

In 2013, our team of 10 Parent Orientation Leaders (POLs) led by Head POL, Arenn Martin, successfully facilitated 13 orientation sessions over the summer months. This is 3 more sessions than previous teams, and they took on the extra responsibility gracefully and without complaint. After participating in months of training, these students gave up their precious time during the summer months to engage and interact with family members of incoming LSU students. They shared insight, guidance, and knowledge with many families, and we are so thankful for all of their hard work! We are excited to continue the tradition of POL success with our 2014 Head POL, Andrew Hall. Keep an eye on the blog for his introduction!

As always, Family Weekend 2013 was a great success, and we enjoyed spending time with the 1500+ guests that we welcomed to campus. The weather was beautiful, unlike what we experienced in 2012, and LSU beat Furman by a whopping 32 points in the Homecoming football game, giving our Tiger fans something to roar about! We received very helpful feedback from many attendees and hope to incorporate some of these ideas in years to come. Planning is already underway for Family Weekend 2014, so be on the look out for the announcement of event dates so you can join in on the fun!

2013 Family Weekend

This year, the LSU Family Association sponsored a crawfish boil accompanying a baseball game tailgate for the Spring Event. This was our first crawfish boil, and it was such a hit that we plan on hosting another for next year’s Spring Event on March 9, 2014! Family Association members, be sure to save the date and keep your eyes peeled for more information in your email inbox in the next few months. The Family Association also started a new tradition with our Summer Send Off parties for incoming LSU students and families. These send off parties helped connect incoming students and family members to current students and families in their area, and we plan to continue this tradition in the summer of 2014! If you are not a member of the Family Association, now is the time to join!
